Update 0.6: Progress, Features, Vision

  • by

Our major 0.6 update is finally ready! Below is a detailed overview of what’s new.

Free Map Navigation

In previous versions, the map was limited: you could move and zoom only within manually added areas. Now the entire map is available – you can freely pan and zoom into any location.

Data Layers

We have added support for multiple data layers that can be enabled or disabled on the map. Forest restoration activities are now just one of many available layers.

This is a direct result of the ideas and prototypes developed during the hackathon and later integrated into the core project. These changes significantly evolved our vision for Reforest Network: our goal is to provide forest restoration practitioners with the widest possible access to open data that can support their work. In the future, you will also be able to add your own data layers and update existing ones.

New Layers

Tree Nurseries – a new layer that helps you find the nearest nurseries to purchase seedlings for your forest restoration initiatives.

Community Councils – a layer containing information about municipalities and local authorities.
For now, it includes only a few examples – it has been added primarily as a proof of concept and will be populated with full data in the future. Its purpose is to simplify access to contact details of the authorities that must be consulted when planning forest restoration projects.

Natura2000 (source) – a layer showing protected natural areas, useful when selecting locations for forest restoration.

Land Use (source) – a cadastral land-use layer displaying different types of land zones. This information is also important for forest restoration planning. Unfortunately, despite being formally classified as open data, the dataset is not fully accessible in practice. At the moment, only geometries are displayed, without names or metadata. We hope to obtain full access to this data in the future.

Current Limitations

Please note that the new version is currently less stable on mobile browsers. In addition, using the Natura2000 and Land Use layers may cause the application to crash in browser – memory optimization is required and is already planned.

Next Priorities
  • User registration
  • Data layer editing for organization representatives
  • Top sponsor companies
  • Native apps for iOS, and Android
